Zephyrus G16 2026 Review
The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 has earned a reputation as one of the best premium gaming laptops you can buy. It combines a slim aluminum chassis with excellent build quality, a stunning OLED display, and high-end NVIDIA graphics in a package that's far easier to carry than most gaming laptops. Last year's model was one of our easiest recommendations for anyone looking for a premium Windows gaming laptop. In fact, we often suggested skipping the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 configurations because the chassis simply couldn't supply enough power for those GPUs to justify their added cost. For 2026, ASUS set out to fix that.

The new Zephyrus G16 pairs Intel's Panther Lake processor with an updated cooling system and increases the GPU's advertised maximum power from 130W to 160W. On paper, that should finally make the RTX 5080 a worthwhile upgrade.
The biggest upgrade this year is Intel's Panther Lake processor. Compared to last year's chip, it delivers better CPU performance while consuming roughly 15 watts less power under heavy workloads. ASUS uses that additional thermal headroom to raise the GPU's advertised power limit to 160W.
Across multiple gaming benchmarks, the new G16 delivers only modest improvements over last year's model. More surprisingly, it often performs much closer to the smaller Zephyrus G14 equipped with an RTX 5070 Ti than to competing RTX 5080 laptops.
Although ASUS advertises a maximum GPU power of 160W, the GPU typically operates closer to 120W during real gameplay when using the stock Turbo profile. That's fairly common for thin gaming laptops, but it also explains why the G16 struggles to pull away from lower-tier configurations.

Using G-Helper, a lightweight alternative to Armory Crate, we created a custom performance profile that allowed the GPU to sustain roughly 140W while maintaining fan noise similar to ASUS' Turbo mode. Though with a slightly warmer keyboard.

That significantly improved performance in GPU-heavy games like Forza Horizon 6, allowing the G16 to compete much more closely with other RTX 5080 laptops.
More importantly, buyers shouldn't have to manually tune a premium gaming laptop to unlock the level of performance suggested by its specifications. Turbo mode should already provide the laptop's best overall gaming experience.
Even with an RTX 5080, the Zephyrus G16 can't consistently match larger systems equipped with AMD's HX-series processors. Games that place heavier demands on the CPU continue to favor those larger laptops, regardless of GPU configuration.
If your priority is achieving the highest possible frame rates, a thicker gaming laptop with a more powerful processor remains the better choice.
While the gaming experience does not fully meet expectations, the creator workloads are a different story. Adobe Premiere Pro performance is excellent and competitive with other premium creator laptops. DaVinci Resolve trails some AMD-powered systems, while Blender rendering performs nearly identically to similarly equipped competitors.

For users who split their time between gaming, video editing, and creative work, the Zephyrus G16 remains an excellent all-round machine.
Battery life continues to be one of the G16's strongest features.
Among Windows gaming laptops, it remains one of the longest-lasting options we've tested, comfortably outlasting most competitors while approaching the endurance of Apple's MacBook Pro 16 during lighter productivity workloads.

The improvement over last year's model is modest, but overall battery life remains excellent for this class.
Another welcome benefit is that CPU performance stays largely intact while unplugged. As with virtually every gaming laptop, NVIDIA's GPU performance is heavily reduced on battery power, so demanding gaming still requires the included charger.
Aside from the internal upgrades, the Zephyrus G16 remains largely unchanged and that's a good thing.
The aluminum chassis is still among the best in the gaming laptop market. It's remarkably thin and light for the hardware inside, making it noticeably easier to carry than many traditional gaming systems.
The OLED display also remains a highlight. It now exceeds 500 nits in SDR brightness while retaining its 240Hz refresh rate, vibrant colors, G-SYNC support, and Advanced Optimus.
ASUS has also refined the Slash Lighting on the lid. When disabled, it blends cleanly into the chassis, giving the laptop a more understated appearance while still offering customization for those who enjoy RGB effects.
Port selection remains excellent, with Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.1, dual USB-A ports, dual USB-C ports that both support charging, and a full-size SD card reader.
The keyboard is good, with 1.7mm of key travel with a tactile click and comes in a standard layout. Though some people may prefer keys with less resistance as this one requires a bit more force to type when compared to laptops such as the Blade 16 from Razer.
For our gamers we also want you to be aware that the RGB on the keyboard is a single-zone so more interesting customizations on that front is not available.
The mechanical trackpad is smooth and accurate, though its click mechanism still requires more force than we'd like. At this price, it's time for ASUS to adopt a haptic trackpad.
One small annoyance is that Silent mode isn't completely silent. The fans remain audible during light workloads, although they're never especially distracting.
Linux compatibility remains mixed. Ubuntu 26 booted successfully with both integrated graphics mode and hybrid graphics enabled. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the webcam, microphone, speakers, and keyboard backlighting all worked correctly. The only notable issue was display brightness control. Fedora 44 failed to boot during testing.
As with many newly released gaming laptops, Linux compatibility will likely improve over time, but early adopters should expect a few rough edges.
The 2026 ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 remains one of the best premium thin-and-light gaming laptops available.
Its OLED display is outstanding, battery life is exceptional for a gaming laptop, build quality remains first-class, and creator performance continues to impress.
The disappointment lies in this year's headline upgrade.
While ASUS advertises a 160W RTX 5080, the laptop rarely reaches that level during normal gaming, leaving performance much closer to RTX 5070 Ti systems than buyers may expect. Manual tuning can unlock additional performance, but that's not something users should have to do on a premium laptop.
For most buyers, the RTX 5070 Ti configuration remains the sweet spot. If maximum gaming performance is your priority, thicker systems like the Legion Pro 7i or ROG Strix Scar 16 are still better choices. And if you can find last year's Zephyrus G16 at a substantial discount, it remains an excellent value.
The 2026 Zephyrus G16 is still one of the best premium gaming laptops you can buy but unless ASUS improves its power tuning, the RTX 5080 model doesn't fully deliver on its promise.
